+ New Braunfels might have a serial poacher on the loose, two Cali cats implicated in summer camp attacks and a turkey with a stick up his you-know-what

Firstly, we’d like to wish a Happy Canada Day to all of our subscribers north of the border. We trust most of you will find yourself a cold beverage at some point today, if you haven’t already. 🇨🇦

And while the rest of us down here in America continue to slowly inch towards our impending long weekend of freedom-fueled celebration, let’s all take a minute to grab a coffee or whiskey (no judgement) and get into what this beautiful Tuesday has to offer.

Here's what's worth reading about so far this week:

  • Smile! - Washington bear poacher nailed two years after the fact 📸

  • Possible serial killer poacher - Another dead deer has turned up in New Braunfels, this time without a head 🕵️‍♀️

  • Cali cats put down - Two mountain lions are laid to rest after an attack at a summer camp ⛺️

  • Stick or arrow? - What in the heck is sticking out of this bird and how it is getting along so well? 🦃

BUSTED BY BIG BROTHER
WASHINGTON MAN SENTENCED TWO YEARS AFTER GETTING CAUGHT ILLEGALLY CHASING BEARS ON LIVE TRAIL CAM FEED

It might have taken awhile, but technology finally caught up with one Washington state man after he was busted for illegally using hounds to chase black bears in the southwestern region of the state.

The incident took place back in the spring of 2023 when 32-year-old Casey Lipe was spotted poaching in real-time on a cellular trail camera. As we previously reported, the owner of the cellular trail cam was alerted to some activity and tuned in to see what all the fuss was about. Watching the events unfold on his cellular camera, the device’s owner noted that he watched as a black bear was chased through his camera trap by a crew of radio-collared hounds.

Knowing full well that the pursuit of bears with hounds is strictly prohibited in the state of Washington, the camera’s owner was moved to the edge of his seat in anticipation of what was coming next…

The first illegally killed deer in New Braunfels

🕵️‍♀️ With two deer illegally killed within days of each other in New Braunfels, a possible connection is now under investigation. Following the discovery of a deer that was found shot with a crossbow bolt and left to die last week, the following day yet another deer was discovered, also killed with an arrow or crossbow bolt tipped with a broadhead. While the first deer was left in-tact by the shooter, the second carcass was discovered after being decapitated by the suspect(s). Both acts were found to have taken place in residential areas, raising safety concerns due to the use of weapons in populated neighborhoods by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The proximity of the incidents, both temporally and geographically, along with the use of similar weapons suggests a potential connection between the two events. While no official statement from authorities confirms they are linked, the similarities indicate a possible pattern of illegal killings. TPWD and the New Braunfels Police Department are actively seeking public assistance, which they are hopeful will uncover further evidence to determine if the same perpetrator(s) are responsible for both acts. TPWD is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. Tips can be reported to Operation Game Thief at 1-800-792-4263.

⛺️ California euthanizes mountain lion after attack at Trinity County Summer Camp. A pair of California mountain lions have been removed from the landscape after an attack that occurred at a summer camp in Shasta-Trinity National Forest on June 14th. According to reports, the lion was held up underneath a tent platform when a camp counselor encountered it while getting things set up for incoming campers. The lion reportedly took a swipe at the counsellors leg before fleeing the scene, leading the camp’s owner in pursuit of the animal.

Heading into the woods, the camp’s owner soon was confronted by a lion he believed to be the culprit. According to the owner, the lion charged him just before he shot it in self-defense, although DNA testing later revealed that it was not the same lion who had attacked his counselor.

California officials continued the search for the lion in question and eventually shot and killed one that was later confirmed to be the attacking party.

“DNA analysis confirming the captured lion was the one responsible for the attack,” wrote a CDFW official in a Facebook post. “The lion was euthanized.”

THOUGHTS FROM THE STAND // FROM OUR NOTEPAD

  1. I was called a poser until I got on a skateboard.  I was called a poser until I played a game of hockey. I was called a poser until I stood up on a surfboard.  I was called a poser until I learned to ride a horse.  I was called a poser until I started writing. I was called a poser until I took my first BJJ class (ok, I still kind of am on that one 😂). I was called a poser until I packed my family into a 20’ u-haul and moved them to America…and so on.

    • Let them chatter but remember, you’re only a poser until you try and trying is life’s secret sauce.

  2. Nostalgia has a way of making the past seem cleaner than it was. Remember that when comparing your very real, but messy present.

  3. Outside of communicating the who, what, where, when of a particular story, mainstream news outlets only exist to perpetuate drama.

  4. It’s easier to fool yourself into believing a falsehood than admit a mistake.

  5. Thank Him first. There is  power in expectation 🙏

VIDEO // SOME THINGS JUST HAVE TO BE SEEN

🦃 What in the heck is stuck in this turkey’s back side? It looks a lot like a stick and seems a little too girthy to be an arrow or a bolt.

Gotta be a stick. Not sure how though…

WANDERINGS // A SFW GLIMPSE OF OUR BROWSER HISTORY

There’s just something about getting older that makes you want to try new things. Once I turned 40, this really accelerated for me. I started to write more (still suck), took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (suck even harder) and have been working at balancing atop a surfboard in the ocean with my daughter (suck at this the most). As it would turn out, I’m likely lost on the first two, but there are some tips out there about learning how to surf as an older dude. I spend a lot of time scrolling on the internet. It’s part of my job, although I get lost in the abyss just as easy as anyone else. Apparently, if your scrolling habit is making you unhappy, you ought to try microjournaling on your phone instead. And while I am out on my next surfing expedition, I might as well try this trick I recently learned about. According to ScIeNcE you can flip a shark upside down and it will immediately freeze. No one seems to know why. Black chardonnay? Never heard of her.
