27-year-old Tommy Lazzaro, a former college quarterback and active US Army sergeant was killed in a tragic hunting accident just before Christmas. The victim, who served with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, was hit by a stray bullet while on base at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. According to reports from a military news outlet, Lazzaro had gone out to the range to help a fellow soldier who was experiencing car trouble.

“We deeply mourn the loss of U.S. Army Sgt. Thomas Lazzaro of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne),” the group’s commander, Col. Patrick Nelson, the group's commander, told the outlet.

“We will never forget his dedication, courage, and commitment to safeguarding our freedoms,” Nelson continued.

“His absence leaves a void that will be felt professionally and personally among those who had the honor of working with Thomas," the commander said. "Our heartfelt condolences extend to his family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time.”

In addition to his military service, Lazzaro was a star quarterback with two Colorado state high school football championships to his name. Following his illustrious high school career, he went on to play quarterback at Central Michigan University while earning his bachelor’s degree in business.

"When we took over the program, Tommy was truly our leader in so many ways," former head coach Jim McElwain said in a CMU memorial post. "CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us. He will be missed by all of the Chippewas."

According to the school, Lazzaro followed both his father’s and grandfather’s legacy into the US Army and received a contract to enter directly into the Special Forces following his graduation from CMU.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas A. Lazzaro III and Lisa A. Lazzaro, his sister Lexie Lazzaro, and his fiancée, Kaley Lynch, according to the funeral tribute.
