Nebraska man bags his buck and his bride 👰

Plus Grand Teton is making cuts, a deer rescued with a Snuggie, tag counterfeiter busted and the first elk in Giles County hits the ground.

After a weeklong onslaught of Black Friday and Easter Monday (or whatever) emails screaming through our inboxes, here's to hoping this one is a welcomed change.

The news cycle was a bit slow last week but things seem to be catching back up now. If you've made it this far into the post-Thanksgiving week, give yourself a pat on the back.

We all deserve it at this point.

Grab your coffee or whiskey (no judgement) and let's get another mid-week dispatch out the door.

Here's what's worth reading about so far this week:

  • Trophy hunter - Nebraska man gets his buck and his bride 💍

  • Making cuts- Grand Teton kicks off elk reduction hunt 😵

  • 'Snuggie' rescue - Colorado officials rescue deer using a 'Snuggie' ⛑️

  • Fake tags- Ontario man nailed for counterfeit tags 🏷️

  • A long time coming - Local man takes first elk in VA county in over 6 decades 👴

Thanks for following along. Don't forget to tell your friends.

HELL OF A SEASON
NEBRASKA MAN BAGS A TROPHY BUCK AND A TROPHY WIFE THIS DEER SEASON

When it comes to multi-tasking, one Nebraska man is not messy around. They say a true mark of a man is knowing what he wants and going after it, and when it comes to bucks and brides, 32-year-old Cole Bures did just that.

Accompanying his longtime girlfriend on a hunt is nothing new for Bures. He and Samantha Camenzind have been chasing whitetails since they met and admit that hunting is something that the pair bonded over early on in their relationship.

The couple had been watching a nice looking buck on trail camera leading up to this year’s hunt. Looking forward to coming face-to-face with the animal, the couple headed out to their tree stand teeming with anticipation about the possibility of an encounter.

It wasn’t long before the incredible 20-point buck stepped out into view. If that wasn’t exciting enough for Camenzind, Bures was sure to sweeten the deal by handing the rifle over and prompting her to take the shot...

A HISTORIC HUNT
FIRST ELK SHOT IN GILES COUNTY IN OVER SIX DECADES

It’s been since 1958 since an elk was shot in Giles County, Virginia.

That is until local outdoorsman Wesley Woodyard pulled the trigger earlier this month on a beautiful bull, baffling locals as to where the animal came from. Having spent his whole life hunting these woods, he too was taken aback when the large bull showed up on his trail camera earlier this year.

State officials continue to look for clues as to how the elk ended up in Gile County and have since taken DNA samples of Wesley’s bull to dig a little deeper. The suspicion is that the el originated from the herd in nearby Buchanan.

“We’ve got about 200 in Buchanan County. In about 50 or so down in Wise county and there are some elk that are spread out in other counties as well and southwest Virginia.” State Wildlife Biologist Jackie Rosenberger said...

FAKE TAGS AND NO LICENSE
ONTARIO MAN BUSTED WITH MULTIPLE COUNTERFEIT DEER TAGS

The province of Ontario has recently moved to more of a do-it-yourself type of deer tag. What was once a heavily-laminated yellow tag with a detachable portion for affixing to a deer has now become a piece of paper printed off at home.

A move many refer to as somewhat of an honor system type of tag (only print one, please!) has proven to not be so honorable, at least in a select few cases. While the majority of hunters are happy to pay for tags and abide by the rules, there will always be those that will take the opportunity to exploit a less-than-perfect set up.

This was the case earlier last fall when conservation officers stopped Ernie Coulas while conducting a routine vehicle patrol in Bangor Township in Hastings County. Entering a hunt camp, officers first made contact with Coulas who told them that he had been wolf hunting. After a quick inspection, officers determined that Coulas was in possession of a 2022 deer tag which the accused failed to surrender at the time of inspection...
