In a surprisingly grim and tragic story coming out of Minnesota, a 31-year-old man is now facing murder charges after he allegedly killed his father in cold blood at the family’s hunting camp.

According to a criminal complaint that had been filed, deputies responded to the shooting around 8:44 p.m. on Friday, November 15th. According to the 911 caller, two men had arrived at his home and said that Kirk Edward Hazlett III had shot his father Kirk Edward Hazlett II.

After fielding the call, investigators responded and soon arrived at the hunting camp where the shooting took place and found the victim deceased with multiple gunshot wounds. According to reports, Hazlett’s uncle told investigators that he, another man and the victim were finishing up dinner when they noticed someone walk onto the property via trail camera. The uncle then went to retrieve his gun and heard three gunshots from the other room.

When the man returned from getting his weapon, he stated that he saw Hazlett inside the cabin with a gun, noting that the victim was still alive and breathing on the floor. The uncle stated that Hazlett told him to sit on the couch as he shot his father in the back of the head to ensure that he was dead. Following the kill shot, the accused then took the two men’s cell phones and let them leave the camp.

According to court documents, Hazlett and his father “weren’t getting along and hadn’t for a very long time” and that Hazlett was “not in good relations with their family.” According to the other man in the cabin, he told police that Hazlett “entered with a mission…he entered to kill [the victim].” He added that Hazlett had shot his father in the head “execution style.”

Kirk Edward Hazlett III is now facing two counts of second degree murder, two counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree burglary.

The gruesome killing comes just a month after first responders were called to the very same cabin after Hazlett was drinking heavily, threatened his father and was trespassed from the property.

The autopsy of the investigation revealed that the victim had been shot nine times. Hazlett III is currently in Pine County Jail and made his first court appearance Monday.
